Q: I have read your articles about the government co-contribution to super of up to $500 but I am left with one issue that is unclear. Can I meet the 10% of income threshold through a combination of wages/salary and what is these days termed the ‘sharing economy’? In my case, I care for animals in various ways and earn a limited income via a platform named “Mad Paws”. These are earnings for work done, but not a traditional form of salary.

A: To meet the 10% test you must have at least 10% of your income from employment related activities or carrying on a business.

The ATO indicates this includes business income earned as a sole trader or in a partnership, which would include income earned in the sharing or gig economy, as long as it is declared as such on a tax return.

Learn more about the co-contribution.

If you’re looking for more control over the investments in your super, perhaps you’re thinking of going self managed. Before you take the leap, and make the time commitment, consider how member-direct options in large funds compare with an SMSF.
