When can I access my super? All conditions of release explained

Thursday 17 April 2025 at 11:00 am AEDT

There are strict rules on when and how we can access our superannuation, referred to as the conditions of release. This webinar will take you through each of these conditions of release and highlight how you can use them to your advantage!

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Watch our previous webinar, SuperGuide members Q&A: March 2025.

Q: I am 56 years old with $1,570,000 in super at 30 June 24. I want to add NCC of $360k this year and $30,000 concessional to this balance. Should I prioritise the $360k first before making the $30k/$60k if I decide to using reserving strategy?

A: The order contributions are made in does not affect contribution limits when the payments are made in the same financial year.

Your non-concessional contribution cap for 2024-25 is determined by your total super balance on 30 June 2024, not any more recent balance.

For example, if a person’s balance was $1.65 million on 30 June 2024, they are permitted to contribute $360,000 in 2024-25 using a three-year bring forward arrangement if they are not already in a bring forward period, since their balance was below the $1.66 million limit that applies for a three-year arrangement on the relevant date.

A non-concessional contribution of this amount is possible in 2024-25 even if the individual’s balance at the time the contribution is made has risen higher than $1.66 million or the $1.9 million transfer balance cap due to investment earnings and concessional contributions.

The total super balance on 30 June 2025 will then be used to determine eligibility to contribute in the following financial year.

You can read more in our articles on bring forward and contribution reserving.

If you’ve been hearing more about ETFs, or even investing in them outside super, have you considered the opportunity to select a mix of ETFs (or even single stocks) for your super? Member direct options can make it happen.
