Deeming is how Services Australia works out the income your financial investments are assumed to earn, whatever they actually earn. Use this calculator to estimate your deemed income for the year and for each fortnight.
It uses the deeming rates that apply from 20 September 2026 to 19 March 2027, and the thresholds from 1 July 2026.
How to use the calculator
- Choose whether you’re single or part of a couple.
- Enter the total value of your financial investments. If you’re part of a couple, enter your combined investments.
- Check the help notes beside the calculator if you’re unsure what to include.
Include bank, building society and credit union accounts, cash, term deposits, managed funds, listed shares and securities, shares in unlisted public companies, gold, silver or platinum bullion, and money you have lent to others.
Include account-based pensions. Super in accumulation phase only counts for a person who has reached Age Pension age.
Don’t include your home, home contents, cars, boats and caravans, investment properties or collections. Rent from an investment property counts as income in the income test, but the property itself isn’t deemed.
Enter both partners’ financial investments combined, including any held in only one partner’s name. The calculator applies the couple threshold to the combined amount and shows your combined deemed income.
The calculator uses the deeming rates from 20 September 2026 and the thresholds from 1 July 2026:
- 1.75% on the first $66,800 if you’re single, or the first $110,600 of a couple’s combined investments
- 3.75% on anything above that
The fortnightly figure is the annual amount divided by 26.
If your account-based pension started before 1 January 2015 and you have received an income support payment, such as the Age Pension, continuously since then, it may still be assessed under the old rules instead of being deemed. Leave it out of the calculator, and check with Services Australia if you’re unsure.
Your deemed income is added to any other income, such as work income and rent, in the Age Pension income test. The same deeming rates are used in the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card income test and in means testing for residential aged care.
