What is a quartile?

Quartiles divide a range of data points into four roughly equal groups. In this case, the 17 pension fund investment options in Chant West’s All Growth category are divided into four groups of nine to ten investment options according to their performance over periods from 3 months to 15 years.

The top 25% of investment options ranked by performance are in Quartile 1 for each period, the next 25% are in Quartile 2, the following 25% are in Quartile 3 and the bottom 25% are in Quartile 4.

The first table below gives the median performance of funds in the top and bottom quartiles, along with the median fund’s performance. The median fund is the one that appears halfway down the rankings. The second table shows the quartile ranking for each fund.
