Q: If I’ve used my 3 year bring forward non-concessional contributions ($360K contribution in 24/25 FY), can I still make concessional contributions in 25/26 and 26/27?

I’m self-employed, so would be making personal contributions to then be claimed on tax.

A: Concessional and non-concessional contribution caps are separate and do not affect one another.

If you are not able to make further non-concessional contributions without exceeding the cap because you have exhausted your bring forward allowance, you may still make concessional contributions under the separate concessional cap.

Personal contributions you make will initially be processed by your super fund as non-concessional amounts. When you submit your notice of intent to claim a tax deduction, the contribution will be converted to a concessional amount and the fund will report this to the ATO. This allows the ATO to correctly record the amount against your concessional cap rather than the non-concessional cap.

To be eligible to make personal tax-deductible contributions you must be under 67, or aged 67-74 and meet the work test.
