Q: We are retiring in couple of months. My wife is 60 and I am 64. How many months can me and my wife stay overseas every year without affecting our age pension application, when i am 67 years of my age? Is it maximum 36 weeks? Or not an issue.

Also I believe 2 full years, before 67 years I have to be in Australia to be eligible to submit my application for Age Pension?

A: Age Pension entitlements can reduce if you spend more than 26 weeks outside Australia.

You need to be an Australian resident and physically in Australia on the day you claim Age Pension, unless you are claiming under a social security agreement with another country.

If you meet the residence requirement of at least 10 years as an Australian resident (and at least 5 continuous years’ residency), there is no specific requirement to be living in Australia for 2 years prior to claiming, however you do need to be permanently living in Australia at the time of your claim.

You can read more about residency requirements here.

If you’re 60+ and not using a transition to retirement strategy, you could be leaving money on the table. Learn how it works and watch the webinar for more.
