Q: Did the Self Managed Superannuation Members Association (SMSMA) ever get off the ground. I noticed it mentioned in one of Trish’s books and would be keen to find out more if it exists.
Trish’s response: Alas, the SMSMA disbanded: I heard that the SMSMA didn’t get sufficient numbers of SMSF trustees to make it a viable self-funding organisation, which is a pity because I believe DIY super trustees definitely need an organisation to represent them, and to facilitate educational and information requirements.
Fortunately, the Australian Investors’ Association (AIA) has stepped into the void. I have been told that the SMSMA members have been offered membership of the AIA, a not-for-profit and independent investors group. I understand that more than two-thirds of AIA members run their own super funds, although you don’t have to run your own super fund to be a member.
The AIA also run special SMSF education groups and seminars (I have spoken at several AIA seminars), and the AIA has an annual investment education conference – the 2010 event is going to be held on the Gold Coast in July.
I believe the AIA is the natural home for SMSF trustees seeking an association of like-minded individuals, although I don’t have enough information to determine the level of influence the AIA has with Government decision-makers. Even so, the Government should be listening very closely to what Australia’s 800,000 or so SMSF trustees have to say – 800,000 voters can determine the outcome of an election.
You can find more information on the AIA, and the 2010 conference on the AIA website: www.investors.asn.au
